Modifying your car?

I know this is a bit wordy but it’s a good read

It is the complete vehicle package that will determine how well your vehicle satisfies your performance preference.

By complete vehicle package we mean the interaction of all a vehicles components and sub-systems, including the engine and related parts (injection, intake manifold, exhaust system, Turbo selection, camshaft and ignition),the transmission, rear end gears, wheel and tyre combinations and diameters and suspension pieces. All of these components must work in unison to produce the desired performance

Before treading through the collection of turbo’s you will need to formulate a definite idea of what your motoring requirements are. Doing so will dictate what rpm power range you will be operating in most often, because Turbo selection as well as camshaft injection, manifold and gearing are based on it, knowing your rpm power range is the key to building a successful performance car, consider your vehicle’s present engine/drive train components and your wallet. Be sure you can afford to purchase all the components necessary to complete the desired vehicle package at your performance level. Remember the further from stock you deviate in the engine department, the more modifications will be required elsewhere in the vehicle.

Refer to performance levels listed below for an idea of the components required to produce a successful vehicle package at the performance level you desire.

I use a skyline as an example because the RB engine can produce a very large range of power out put.

Starting with a RB20de not turbo

Pod filter and extractors.

Mild cams and valve spring upgrade

Ported head

As this stands the standard drivetrain is fine as it was built stronger than was required.but the brakes will need upgrading due to this model being a base model it has the smallest brakes, cheap to upgrade off other models.

RB20det Turbo

Slight upgrade

Rb25 turbo with boost increase.

Pod air filter.

Free flow exhaust.

This gives the car a good increase in power.

The clutch is the first weak link and needs upgrading.

Gearbox just copes the diff is fine, trction becomes tricky

Brake need upgrade on brake pads (the turbo model has bigger brake’s to start with, compared to the non turbo)

The clutch is the first weak link and needs upgrading.you upgrade it

Gearbox copes the diffs are fine, traction is great

Brake’s are great but still have a bit of trouble around Puke Kohe

You paid $27000 The whole car now owe’s you $35000 but your rapped with it when you go to Mere Mere ¼ mile drag strip and pull run after run at 12.6 times.

You go to Puke Kohe open day you have great fun but your on the back on a tow truck to come home.on stripping the engine you find the oil pump exploded and the big end bearing are non excistant and the crank needs replacing.

You find yourself still owing $10000 needing $10000 to fix it and you asking you mom if you can borrow her car. So when you play with cars make sure you can afford the misshapes.

The whole car owe’s you $42500 but your rapped with it when you go to Mere Mere ¼ mile drag strip and pull run after run at 12.6 times with ease and you know that with a bit more tuning and practise you’ll do better

You go to Puke Kohe open day you have great fun and drive home with the adrenilan stuff pumping and get a ticketfor 135km in a 100km zone. You find yourself still owing $19500 plus the ticket, your at work on Monday and paying off the loan ASAP.

The Rb26dett GTR is out of the box great and does very well under modification

After you drag race it they say don’t come back until you have a roll cage( you fit one)

The list goes on and the guys at HKS almost know you by name

This gives the engine a huge increase in power.

You take it to Mere Mere and no one beets you (croydon and Heat treatment weren’t there).

Next weekend off to Puke kohe you have great fun,you relise how these cars would take out every race there in.

On the way home adrenilyn pumping you fly past a policeman at 200km then you put your foot down 250km is there in an instant and climbing.(the police get your plate you loose your licence and your car is impounded, just remember not to speed and avoid this option)

You are so rapped with the car.

The down side is you can only fit one kid in the back your girl friend refuses to go in the car with you as you showed her full throttle once (she lost bladder control), your mum had to go to the doctor after her ride, your dad still puts on a brave face but finds an excuse why he can’t go with you in your car(bad Back ect), Even your big balled hard mate went white and had trouble speaking afterwards. there’s no room in the boot for shopping. And filling the tank every couple of days is getting to you.

This absolutely great car seams to be too good for everyone to ride in with you.

And what killed your sole about this car was you took of slow and then the GTS4 with a RB30DET changed lanes behind you and floored it, you smile and floor it (I’ll show him) your in secondand it seams your car has died but it’s pulling slowly he wipps you until your boost comes on at 5500rpm (that’s O.K. it revs to 9500rpm)  suddenly it’s all on your going to fly past him but his brake lights come on as do yours for the red light. Your well pissed off.

You’ve built a monster that no one will ride with you and the only place it stands out is at the drags or at the track of course everyone love’s it at the show’s.

But you want to drive it everyday.

You go and buy a GTS4 and get a Rb30DET built it’s only got 450hp but you drive it everyday, it’s lower reving (it has torque at low revs and then the turbo come on boost at 3800rpm and red line’s at 7000rpm) being more driveable and useable, yes it only pulls low to mid 11′s and it’s not so good at Puke kohe but you like it more as you can drive it everyday, in refection you see that full out beast isn’t what you really wanted, you wanted something that is really fast but drivable on the street, you slowly fall in love with this car even your girlfriend finally gets in happily as long as you promise not to scare her.

The Suspension is softer and your dads bad back clears up, your mum still complains about a sore neck every time she goes in your car(but she still goes with you).

RB30DET

Nissan never made this engine as you might know but it is the best everyday street engine you could build.

Medium  HP build

T3/T4 hybred turbo with boost increase. Exturnal wastegate

Pod air filter.

Intercooler

Aftermarket computer

Head gasket

Forged pistons race bearing

Free flow exhaust.

This gives the car a good increase in power and torque.

The clutch needs upgrading.

Gearbox needs to be from a RB25Det   R33/32 diff is fine, even though traction is a real problem even after you fit different wheels and tyre (if your not using a GTs4 or a GTR)

The brake are just coping

Large HP Build

Garret gt3040 or GT35 turbo with boost increase. External wastegate

Pod air filter.

Intercooler,

Injectors, fuel pressure regulator large throttle body, aftermarket inlet manifold

Air flow meters(300z)

Custom remap of computer or Aftermarket computer, Dyno time

Cams, valve springs ,ported head (the head you start with also very inportant on what you want from the engine)

Forged Pistons race bearings, balanced oil pump upgrade

Free flow exhaust.

This gives the engine a huge increase in power.

The clutch is the first weak link and needs upgrading to a twin plate or tripple plate   unit (Rear drive needs a gearbox from a R33 RB25Det)

Gearbox  needs replacing occasionally the diff is needing replacement occasionally, even though traction is almost impossible (if you rear drive still) even after you fit different wheels and tyre, you wish you started with the r33 or R32 GTR/GST4 as four wheel drive would save you a lot of money on suspension and tyre upgrades

The brakes need upgrading. You fit GTR calipers and disks, this just almost copes but not even for one lap around puke kohe.

This will never have as high horse power of a highly worked RB26DETT but will stay relatively driveable and street able.

When building a fast car you need to work out your budget and what you want the car for when it’s done, daily driver, weekend fast street car, drag car or race car show car. As this is the most important place to start, If your being advised that getting more power will decrease the drivability for street make shore your O.K. with that. Do not start building before you work out what you want as fitting a intercooler may just waste your money if it’s too small or too big when you change your mind, If you’ve done lots of bolt on mod and it goes well, but you want to go to the next level and most of the bits you’ve put on are not usable with the new build up, check what you can sell the bits for or even if you can sell the whole car and start from scratch with a new car (It may cost you less in the long run). Try not to shop around too much and not to read too many magazines (as there only brief stories of the build a list of bits mainly)build your car at one shop only not bits from here there and everywhere(it makes lemon) peak horse power isn’t an indication of what it drive’s like.

One thing people always forget is the clutch this if not budgeted for and can blow the budget by at least $1000-3000 or more

Sometimes it’s cheaper to go out and buy a GTR, EVO, STI than build a quick street drivable car but if you want something different perhaps building you car up is the best option, many people have bought a GTS4, GSR, WRX, and spent money on them and matched the cost of buying the big brother and only match the cost of doing so not the performance. That’s great but the resale can be a problem.

Happy car building, take it easy on the street

The only place to race is the track

Speed does not kill it just exaggerates the mistakes (a mistake at 100k might kill but at 200k it will kill)
